What is the total number of employees who will lose their jobs due to the closing of freestanding Kids R Us and Imaginarium stores?
There is a potential of 3,800 associates across stores affected, distribution centers affected, regional support and headquarters support. However the company is making every effort to find new roles for many of these affected associates.
When were the associates informed?
All affected associates were notified over the weekend or before the stores opened on Monday, November 17.
When is their last day of work?
Dates will vary depending on the associate's location. The majority of affected stores will be closed by January 31, 2004.
Are any of these employees moving to other store locations?
We are exploring the best methods for our associates to be aware of other positions available within the organization.
How many combo stores (Toys "R" Us with clothing) are there currently?
We remain committed to the apparel business and will continue to support our 376 combo stores.
Are there plans for more combo stores?
We will add combo stores as the business dictates.
Where are the Kids R Us stores that will be converted to the Babies "R" Us stores?
We are considering reopening approximately 15 - 20 of the Kids R Us locations as Babies "R" Us stores, but no decisions have been made at this time.
Will there be more store closings this year?
We do not have any additional plans at this time.
Why was this decision made?
This decision was not made lightly and all alternatives were considered. Despite substantial efforts we have made in recent years, sales in our freestanding Kids "R" Us and Imaginarium stores have simply not met expectations. However, we remain committed to the apparel business and the learning and creativity toy business in our other locations.
