Position Purpose:

To assist in the shipping and receiving of merchandise to and from the store and to ensure that all merchandise is accurately stocked and priced, and provide customer service, as necessary. This job is composed of a variety of different tasks which may be covered by operational guidelines, and while individual judgment may occasionally be required in order to complete assigned tasks, most questions are directed to the Store Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Facilitate the unloading, pricing and stocking of merchandise according to operational guidelines in order to ensure that the store is well stocked and that supply counts are accurate.
  2. Update the store's Order Guide as necessary to verify that all pricing and inventory information is accurate, ensure that all merchandise is properly priced, that all SKU information is correct and that all required inventory control paperwork is competed accurately and in a timely manner.
  3. Adhere to and promote established safety procedures.
  4. Perform routine housekeeping tasks as required to maintain the professional image and appearance of the store, to include sweeping/mopping the floors, dusting, washing the windows, facing the merchandise on the shelves, etc.
  5. Participate in the completion of quarterly and annual physical inventory counts.
  6. Special projects as assigned.

Nature of Supervision:

General instruction is provided on some, but not all, tasks to be performed and work is checked upon completion. In addition, non-routine tasks may be assigned. There is infrequent opportunity to make mistakes which could cause minor delays or expense to the store.

Supervisory Responsibility: None.

Educational Background:

While a high school diploma or its equivalent (GED) is generally preferred, an applicant must be able to demonstrate basic math proficiency and above average communication skills.

Previous Experience:

While no previous experience is required for this position, a qualified applicant will possess an aptitude for basic sales techniques and an interest in animals, as well as a professional appearance and demeanor.

Work Environment:

The majority of job duties are conducted indoors, although merchandise shipments and customer carry-outs will require that an employee leave the store briefly. Because this position requires bending, kneeling, moving merchandise (up to 50 pounds, as necessary) and standing for long periods of time, there may be risk of injury resulting from improper procedures. In addition, employees may be required to perform stocking duties during non-store hours.

Contacts:

In addition to contact with the general public at the store and at store-related events, contact with other departments both in the field and at the Corporate Offices involving the routine exchange of information may be a regular part of this job.
