Grooming Training Centers Course Overview:


PETCO Animal supplies operates over 400 grooming salons and employs more than 2000 Groomers nationwide. We have 13 state of the art training centers located in Escondido CA, Mesa AZ, Glendale CA, Seattle WA, Vacaville CA, Oakdale MN, Lansing IL, Houston TX, Dallas TX, Warminster PA, Massapequa NY, Waltham MA and Denver CO. They support PETCO's grooming salons by conducting training in all aspects of animal care and grooming techniques to qualified candidates.

The training course provides up to 20 weeks of paid training consisting of classroom and hands-on training in a grooming salon under the direct supervision of a PETCO Grooming Manager. Upon successful completion of the training course, the new Groomer is placed in a PETCO salon.

Pre Grooming Training Center admittance requirements:

  • Successfully completes PETCO pre-employment screening.
  • Successfully completes the pre-employment assessment and interviews.
  • Demonstrates a strong interest in animal welfare.
Training Period Location Training Schedule
Week 1-4 Grooming Training Center Monday - Thursday
  In-Store Training One Additional Day: either Friday, Saturday or Sunday

Overview
During this session, Grooming Students will learn PETCO Grooming Safety and Procedures and receive customer service and sales training. Students will be introduced to basic grooming equipment. Instruction will include basic trims and cuts that are most often performed on dogs.

Evaluation
At the end of week 4, students will be given a technical evaluation consisting of performing basic trims and cuts on a number of dogs. Students must pass this evaluation with an 80% or better grade before moving on to the next phase.

Week 5-12 In-Store Training 40 hours weekly

Overview
During this session, Grooming Students will practice skills learned during weeks 1-4 and complete exercises in the Training Center Workbook.

Evaluation
Students will be required to successfully perform haircuts on 50% of the dogs groomed during this 7week period.

Week 13-14 Grooming Training Center Monday - Friday

Overview
During this session, Grooming Students will learn scissoring and thinning shear techniques and learn the cuts of various dog breeds as well as begin learning cat grooming techniques.

Evaluation
At the end of week 14, students will be given a technical evaluation consisting of performing shear techniques and cuts on a number of dogs of various breeds. Students must pass this evaluation with an 80% or better grade before moving on to the next phase.

Week 15-20 In-Store Training 40 hours weekly

Overview
Grooming Students will practice all skills learned through week 14 and complete a second Grooming Workbook.

Evaluation
Demonstrate a working knowledge of all aspects of grooming, display the necessary hands-on skills required to perform grooming techniques to customers' satisfaction and pass a technical evaluation consisting of performing basic trims and cuts on a number of dogs of various breeds. Students must pass this evaluation with an 80% or better grade in order to graduate.

Graduation
Grooming Students that successfully complete the course will be promoted to Groomer.

Pay

All Students receive pay and benefits according to PETCO policy during training. During classroom instruction students will receive the state minimum wage. During the In-Store portion of training students will be eligible to receive 40% commission on work performed or state minimum wage, which ever is greater. Upon successful completion of training new graduates will be eligible to receive 50% commission or state minimum wage, which ever is greater.
