Front Line Competency Dictionary - Effective Communicator

LABEL

DEFINITION

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATORUnderstands what needs to be communicated and the best way to deliver it; develops strategies to influence and build relationships to gain the respect and trust of others by adjusting the style and method of communication to specific audiences.

INDICATORS

  1. Accurately determines what needs to be communicated
  2. Capably delivers information in the most appropriate way (e.g., on paper, orally, electronically)
  3. Adjusts style of communication (e.g., participative, humor, assertive) for specific audience in order to influence and build relationships
  4. Employs active listening techniques to ensure understanding
  5. Prepares written material that facilitates an understanding of the issues.
  6. Ensures that lines of communication remain open among all the parties involved in an issue

REPRESENTATIVE EXAMPLES

  • realizing that many Technical Assistance Guides sit on a shelf unopened, designed a "catchy" cover for one so as to encourage its use
  • drew ideas on paper (as an alternative to verbal description) so as to help others visualize and understand them
  • influenced movement of staff meetings from afternoon to morning so that staff will come to work on time, be awake and participate
  • consciously asked each individual for input (thoughts and feelings) on issues, resulting in more effective team processes
  • created a visual representation which provided a "coherent picture" of many different views and ideas
