SUBJECT:      MAKING THE CONNECTION: NEW STRATEGIES FOR REEMPLOYING UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE (UI) CLAIMANTS IN THE NEW GLOBAL ECONOMY CONFERENCE (June 26 – 27, 2007)

                                                                                                                                               

 

1.       Purpose:

  • To remind grantees of the upcoming regional conference regarding the reemployment of laid-off workers, including those receiving unemployment compensation, those that are dislocated and/or trade-impacted workers;
  • To announce the extension of the meeting registration and hotel reservation due dates to June 1st and June 8th, respectively; and
  • To provide an updated version of the draft agenda.

 

2.       Background:  The changing global economy challenges our workforce system to look to innovative approaches in our service delivery strategy to respond to needs of dislocated workers and UI claimants.  The current and projected labor/skills shortages provide new opportunities for collaboration and innovation.  This event will enable networking among workforce partners who focus on reemploying our customers, learning about new tools and their application, and sharing of creative approaches to achieve our unified reemployment mission.

 

3.       Target Audience:  The conference and workshops are designed for both leaders and experts interested in providing reemployment services to UI claimants and/or dislocated workers.  This is a working session to bring together policy-makers and program experts to explore new ways of effectively re-employing unemployed workers.  UI Directors, TAA Directors, Dislocated Worker Program Directors, and WIA/ES Directors and their staff who are responsible for leading reemployment initiatives, state leaders from the workforce development system, and members of state and local Workforce Investment Boards are needed to bring all perspectives to the issue and will benefit from attendance at this important conference. 

 

4.       Logistics:  The conference will be held on June 26 – 27, 2007 at the Century House in Latham, New York.  The hotel is five miles from the Albany (NY) Airport.  The meeting will begin at 8:30am on June 26th and conclude by 3:30pm on June 27th.  To register for the meeting, please complete and fax the attached form to Ms. Marlene Cowan at 617-788-0125.  by June 1, 2007. 

 

To make hotel reservations, please contact the Century House (http://www.thecenturyhouse.com) at

888-674-6873.  A block of rooms is being held under the name, “US Department of Labor.”  All hotel rooms are being reserved at the Federal per diem rate of $103, plus 14% tax.  Hotel reservations are the responsibility of each attendee and must be made no later than June 8, 2007.  After this date, special rates and/or availability cannot be guaranteed.  In order to guarantee your room, please be sure to provide a major credit card when making your reservation.  Room and tax charges, along with all incidental charges, are the responsibility of each individual and must be paid upon departure.
