Subject: Job Corps Suspending New Enrollments
AFFECTED PROGRAM: Job Corps
PURPOSE: To notify State Workforce Agencies, YouthBuild grantees, and Registered Apprenticeship program operators of the recent decision to suspend new enrollment for Job Corps, and the affect of this decision on American Job Centers, YouthBuild grantees and Registered Apprenticeship programs.
REFERENCE: None.
BACKGROUND: The ETA-funded State Workforce Agencies, YouthBuild grantees and Registered Apprenticeship programs together form part of an integrated workforce development system for the American public.
MESSAGE: Effective January 28, 2013, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Job Corps program temporarily suspended new student enrollment and admission to its centers. The length of the suspension is expected to last no later than June 30, 2013. Information on when this suspension will be lifted will be posted at www.jobcorps.gov, as well as on the official Job Corps Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/doljobcorps. Exceptions to this policy will be made only for applicants that are documented homeless, runaways, or in the foster care system.
Job Corps staff are encouraging interested applicants to use the resources and tools available at the local American Job Center (formerly known as Career One-Stop Centers), to assist with their education and training needs. Applicants are also given contact numbers and website information for other government training resources that help youth gain employment and/or training, such as YouthBuild and the Registered Apprenticeship programs.
The effect of this action may result in increased demand for services from staff at American Job Centers, YouthBuild grantees and Registered Apprenticeship programs. Staff at these ETA-funded agencies is encouraged to assist the applicants.
ACTION REQUIRED: SWAs are requested to provide this information to appropriate staff.
