OVERVIEW:
The Columbus, Nebraska WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT
career center serves a rural area in the northeast part of
the state. Columbus, the “City of Power and Progress”
is an industry-friendly community. We are the most industrialized
city per capita in the state with over 6,000 manufacturing
jobs among 70 companies in the immediate area. Our manufacturing
is very diverse and includes: medical, electronics, food processing,
computers and automation, and meat fabrication. We have a
fast growing population of latino immigrants to our area,
whom are mostly lured here by the meat processing jobs in
the area.
We administer employment and training programs
under the direction of the Greater Nebraska Workforce Investment
Board.
Our staff has worked very hard for many years
to establish trust relationships with area businesses. Our
experience tells us that it takes several years to build rapport
and confidence with businesses. The opportunities that have
been come our way to perform fee for services with business
is only because of the relationships we have built over the
years with these employers.
STRENGTHS:
Economic
Development
Our community has a very strong economic development
strategy that includes not only workforce development and
training, but a strong business partnership amongst business
leaders in our community. Because workforce development is
an integral part of this process, we have increased the number
of employers that we serve and improved our overall image
in the community.
Reimbursable
Services
Being able to be responsive and resourceful
to employers needs our staff has always done our best to serve
the business customer and have been open to new ways of serving
them. Because of this we have “pioneered” the
cost reimburseable services for our state
Community
involvement
We
are integrally involved in the community through the Chamber
of Commerce, Columbus family resource center, civic organizations
and others that have helped us network with businesses in
our community. This involvement has helped us increase the
number of employers whom use our services.
