Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao Announces $998,000 Grant To Aid Dislocated Idaho Workers
WASHINGTON - U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced a National Emergency Grant of up to $998,664, with an initial release of $333,000 to aid approximately 85 workers who were laid off from Moore North America, Inc., in Jerome, Idaho. The grant of $998,640 covers the total amount requested by the state.
"The President and I are committed to providing workers affected by this closing the skills training necessary to find good jobs," Secretary Elaine L. Chao said. "This $998,000 in funding will help workers affected by the closing of Moore North America obtain transition-related assistance through outreach, assessment, on-the-job training, entrepreneurial training, and customized skills training."
In response to the company's announcement, staff from the state's Dislocated Worker Unit, accompanied by staff from the local One Stop Career Center, met with company personnel on May 22, 2003, to provide intervention assistance for workers affected by the closing.
The grant is part of the Department of Labor's continued efforts to create a demand driven workforce investment system to help prepare U.S. workers in today's economy. National Emergency Grants are part of the Secretary's discretionary fund. A grant is awarded after a state submits a request and the grant guidelines have been met.
