U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao Announces $375,000 Grant to Aid Dislocated South Dakota Workers

WASHINGTON - U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced a National Emergency Grant of $375,000 to supplement an earlier grant so that workers dislocated from Gateway Incorporated in Sioux Falls and North Sioux City, S.D., can continue to be served.

"This Administration is committed to helping workers who are transitioning," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao. "This $375,000 in funding will continue to provide assessment, counseling and relocation assistance to help these workers find new employment opportunities as quickly as possible."

Awarded to the South Dakota Department of Labor, this is the fourth supplemental grant to the state to assist Gateway workers. The grant will assist 155 workers who were left without jobs when the company restructured this year and will continue to serve approximately 820 workers who were laid off due to earlier company restructuring events.

In addition to assessment, counseling and relocation assistance, the project will provide services including development of individual re-employment plans, case management, short term pre-vocational services and job search assistance.

Supportive services like childcare, transportation assistance, job-related certifications, uniforms and equipment will also be available.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary's discretionary fund. A grant is awarded after a state submits a request and grant guidelines have been met.
