U.S. Labor Secretary Announces Additional Funds of
$442,500 To Aid Dislocated Workers in Maine
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced additional National Emergency Grant funds of $442,500 to aid approximately 105 Maine workers impacted by a second round of layoffs at three companies.
"This additional grant of $442,500 will help Maine workers who worked at Bath Iron Works, L.L. Bean and Fairchild Semiconductor to receive individual counseling, occupational skills training, career development assistance and a variety of other valuable help to transition to other job opportunities," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao.
The grant to the Maine Department of Labor will help workers in Cumberland, Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc, Waldo and York Counties. The Coastal Counties Workforce Board will oversee expenditure of the funds which will provide training in occupations that need to be filled in the local community -- health care, construction trades, social services, teaching, business/computer technology and entrepreneurship.
National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary's discretionary fund. A grant is awarded after a state submits a request and the grant guidelines have been met.
