National Head of Employment and Training to Participate in Memphis Roundtable
Focus will be partnering with community and faith-based organizations
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employment and Training Emily Stover DeRocco will be the featured guest at a roundtable Tuesday, Oct. 28, in Memphis. The meeting will focus on Touching Lives and Communities, a project to facilitate partnerships between the local public workforce investment system and grassroots community and faith-based organizations.
"Employment and training in the new global economy must be effective, efficient and address business needs so workers are prepared as quickly as possible for available jobs at good pay with promising career tracks," said DeRocco. "Community and faith-based organizations are a primary link between valuable training and the job seekers who need it most because they have extraordinary reach into our communities, as well as a history of working with some individuals facing barriers to employment."
Memphis is one of two sites funded by the Department of Labor to develop a model for collaboration that will help community organizations access a full array of government funding and expertise. In Memphis, the project has brokered a groundbreaking partnership among the Workforce Investment Board, the Mayor's Office of Faith-Based Initiatives, and local grassroots organizations. The second pilot project is located in Milwaukee.
In addition to DeRocco, roundtable participants will include Memphis Workforce Investment Board Chair Dr. La Don Jones and Vice-Chair Dwain Beydler, as well as representatives of the local business and faith-based community.
