U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao Announces $818,000 Grant to Aid Dislocated Ohio Workers

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced a National Emergency Grant of $818,617 to assist dislocated workers in Ohio. The grant will have an initial release of $288,516.

"The President and I want to ensure that dislocated workers get the training and assistance they need to prepare for new and better careers," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao. "This grant helps workers affected by layoffs at two Ohio companies - Kardex and Airolite - by providing an array of services including occupational skills training, on-the-job training, entrepreneurial training and job readiness training."

"In addition to training, affected workers will receive specialized services including assessment, individual counseling, career planning, employment development and adult education," added Chao. "Supportive services such as child care, transportation assistance, job-related certifications, uniforms and equipment will also be provided."

Awarded to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, the grant will assist approximately 66 workers from Belmont, Monroe, Morgan, Nobel and Washington counties. The workers were employed at the Kardex plant in Reno and Airolite's Marietta plant.

National Emergency Grants are part of the Secretary's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines.
