The WorkPlace, Inc.

350 Fairfield Avenue

Bridgeport, CT 06604

24 months

POPULATION SERVED: Disabled job seekers in southwestern Connecticut.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: The proposed project, "Everyone Works 2004," will be an effort to augment the existing programs and services that were established under a Work Incentive Grant made in May 2002.

The extended program is expected to significantly increase job opportunities for people with a wide range of disabilities by providing two highly skilled and experienced Disability Program Navigators. They will offer one-on-one help to clients with disabilities and also outreach to businesses to promote the hiring of job seekers with disabilities.

The addition of these navigators will build on successes of the current program and take it to the next level in terms of effectively serving its clientele. Funds from this award would support the two positions as well as the basic overhead costs.

The WorkPlace has taken steps to achieve permanent systemic change beyond the funding for this grant. It has, for example, (1) mandated that the Disability Program Navigator positions be included in all subsequent contracts with the selected One-Stop Center operators; (2) required that that those center operators maintain and upgrade assistive technologies as needed; and (3) required that training on disability issues be provided so that staff members will continue to be sensitive and creative in serving their clients.

The WorkPlace has established a strong consortium of supportive entities that provide services for the client population. They include several state agencies, the Governor's Commission on Employment of People with Disabilities, and an independent living center in the region.

GEOGRAPHIC AREA TO BE SERVED: Fairfield County, Connecticut (southwest part of the state)
