$10 million competition for STEM Funds

U.S. Department of Labor announces $10 million competition to expand workforce system support of science, technology, engineering and math careers.

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration today (January 15, 2008) announced a new, two-phase competition to build the workforce investment system's capacity to support careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.

"Since approximately half of America's economic growth in the past several decades has been attributed to industries related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics, this $10 million grant competition will boost the ability of the workforce investment system to support the pursuit of careers in these high-growth industries that provide excellent job opportunities," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao.

Proposals must clearly outline how activities will result in the achievement of the overall objectives of this initiative, including: expanding training and aligning current STEM-related activities and resources at One-Stop Career Centers; providing participants with access to STEM coaches and mentors who will link program participants to employers, and provide advice and guidance on entering STEM fields; and creating "career blueprints" outlining career paths for individual participants.

USDOL Assists Dislocated Workers in Missouri

U.S. Department of Labor Announces More Than $1 Million in Assistance to Help Dislocated Workers in Missouri.

The U.S. Department of Labor today (september 20, 2007) announced a grant of $1,098,450, with an initial release of $499,304, to assist approximately 310 workers dislocated as a result of the permanent closure of the O'Sullivan Industries plant located in Lamar, Mo.

"This nearly $1.1 million grant will help Missouri workers access employment services to help them find new jobs in high growth industries," said U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao. The grant, awarded to the Missouri Division of Workforce Development, will provide services not covered under the TAA program. Services may include career counseling, skills assessment and job placement assistance.

Financial Report 9130 Notice

ETA is in the process of implementing a new quarterly financial reporting form, the U.S. DOL ETA FINANCIAL REPORT (ETA-9130). The ETA-9130 will be required for use by all ETA grantees, beginning with the quarter ending September 30, 2007. Upon implementation of the new form, all previously required financial reporting forms will become obsolete.

The ETA web-based reporting system is being appropriately modified to enable transition to the new reporting format. The basic required financial reporting data elements will continue to be collected. A new Federal Cash Section and a Federal Administrative Expenditures line item have been added to the data requirements. Provision to collect program-specific data is accommodated in a special section of the report.

Data entered into the ETA web-based reporting system for quarters prior to September 30, 2007, will be migrated (by ETA) to the new reporting formats. For data elements not previously required, a cumulative figure must be entered by the grantee, for the September 30, 2007 reporting quarter. Transition to the ETA-9130 is expected to be seamless.

Reporting format(s) and corresponding instructions applicable to your program(s) are available on-line.

Questions concerning implementation of the ETA-9130 should be directed to Isabel Danley at 202-693-3047 or danley.isabel@dol.gov.
